Welton Imp Walking Footballers achieve Rapid Growth
Welton Imp Walking Football Club has achieved staggering rapid growth in its two years since foundation but are still expanding and searching for new players to return to this version of our wonderful game or perhaps just start playing in their later lives now they are in retirement.
Tucked away in a leafy corner of Welton Village is one of the best artificial modern FA Approved 3G AGP football pitch facilities in Lincolnshire, which inspired a few senior retired footballers and other local residents to get together and start playing Walking Football in October 2015.
To begin with it was just a few friends enjoying the thrill of playing football again but the national surge in the popularity of this gentle form of the beautiful game came to Welton and membership boomed and attracted over 40 members with support by a local sponsor Imp Travel. Hence their name.
Every Thursday at 11am a large group of around twenty plus gather and play football for an hour to the sounds of shouted advice, appeals and generally good natured banter followed by a gathering their local to down a pint with lots of comradeship and topical banter from all walks of life.
They have entered into various interclub competitions and leagues. The Welton Imp teams have enjoyed much success including recent friendlies with Louth Town WFC and Grimsby Corinthians WFC, arguably one of the top Walking Football teams in the UK. Welton have also played in local competitions meeting teams from Gainsborough, Spilsby, Boston and Stamford. Welton are able to more than hold their own against other clubs but their objective, as with all other clubs, is primarily enjoyment and friendship playing within their abilities and age related restrictions.
A program of more, friendly games against other Lincolnshire clubs is planned for 2018 and Welton will enter suitable competitions organised by local clubs and the Football Association.
So popular is their Thursday sessions Welton Imps have started additional, weekly slots on Mondays same place and are now welcoming new members.
